Ange Postecoglou is set to quit as manager of the Socceroos after the next stage of qualification regardless of whether Australia make the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia or not, according to News Corp’s David Davutovic.

Postecoglou apparently would have quit earlier had Australia qualified directly to Russia, but stayed on after Japan and Saudi Arabia finished ahead of the Socceroos.

The third place finish meant Australia have to qualify through playoffs against Syria and the fourth placed team in CONCACAF — mostly likely to be Honduras or Panama.

They cleared the first hurdle last night in a struggle against Syria, needing an extra time Tim Cahill goal to win the two-legged tie 3-2 on aggregate.

A key reason for Postecoglou’s decision to quit is believed to be what he perceives as strong attacks for the media.

Heavy scrutiny on Postecoglou’s selection and tactical decisions has led to the 52-year-old feeling that he is being undermined by the media.

Postecoglou has managed Australia in 47 matches, including the 2014 World Cup in which Australia didn’t make it out of the group stage and the 2015 Asian Cup triumph when James Troisi scored an extra-time winner in the final against South Korea at ANZ Stadium.
