Australia will reportedly make a big call at selection for tonight's must-win World Cup Qualifier, dropping star midfielder Aaron Mooy to the bench.

The Daily Telegraph has reported Ange Postecoglou will move the Huddersfield midfielder to the bench, only playing "a bit-part role".

Tom Rogic will then come into the side, with Mathew Leckie replacing Josh Risdon out on the right wing.

Dropping Mooy would be a bold call ahead of Australia's must-win game against Syria tonight, with the Socceroos needing a win or a goalless draw to progress in their bid to feature in the 2018 World Cup.

If Australia progress against Syria, they will play off against the fourth-placed side from the Central and North American region, with the winner of that earning World Cup qualification.

That country appears likely to be one of USA, Panama or Honduras.

Fail to make it and it will be the first time Australia hasn't featured at the World Cup since 2002.
