West Ham United have confirmed that they are investigating an incident at London Stadium in which a home supporter allegedly made a comment about the death of an opposing player's baby.

It's believed that a number of comments were directed at West Brom midfielder Jake Livermore as he was substituted off, including one about his infant son, who died in 2014.

Video footage did not clearly pick up the incident but it's reported that Livermore then confronted the supporter before he had to be escorted down the tunnel.

West Ham have confirmed that the fan was spoken to by staff and removed from the stadium almost immediately, and that they would be working closely with both West Brom and Livermore to determine the exact events.

"The player has confirmed he does not wish to make this a police matter," the team said in a statement. "However, given the nature of the allegations, the club will continue to investigate before taking the appropriate action."

West Brom, too, released a statement, issuing their "total support" of Livermore and his actions.

"Following his substitution in the second half, Jake was subjected to general abuse from home supporters which he shrugged off," they said. "However, he acknowledges that he moved to confront one spectator who chose to make a comment about the death of his infant son.

"The club would like to think that all right-minded football supporters could understand this reaction which did not result in any physical exchanges before Jake was led away to our dressing room.

"Jake is an outstanding young individual who has the total support of everyone at the club and he has made it clear he considers this statement to be an end to an unhappy incident."
