Italy, one of the world's biggest and most successful footballing nations, has failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in nearly 60 years.

After a lacklustre European qualifying stage, the Azzuro were pitted against Sweden in a two leg, do-or-die playoff.

Sweden took a slender 1-0 aggregate lead into this morning's second leg, but despite 24 shots in anger, the Italians couldn't find a way to score, with the game ending 0-0.

It is only the second time, and the first time since 1958, that Italy have failed to qualify for world football's biggest event.

It has been a stark fall from grace for the four-time World Cup winners, who last lifted the trophy back in 2006 after that famous game against the Socceroos.

They join the Netherlands and Chile as huge footballing nations that have failed to qualify for next year's Russian World Cup.

The Socceroos face Honduras tomorrow night in Sydney to try and seal their spot in a fourth consecutive World Cup.
