Money can buy you a lot of things in world sport.

If you're Real Madrid, billions of dollars should be enough to snare some of the world's best players along with a Champions League trophy, or several.

But it doesn't necessarily buy you market value.

The number crunchers at Forbes have ranked Manchester United as the new top dogs in world soccer (or football, if you're a purist).

In Aussie dollars, they're worth an eye watering $4.91 billion.

The Red Devils leap frogged Real Madrid.

"For the first time in five years, Manchester United is the world's most valuable soccer team, worth $3.69 billion. The team's return to the top spot is a testament to their powerful brand and marketing acumen. Manchester United generated revenue of $765 million during the 2015-16 season, $77 million more than both Barcelona and Real Madrid."

The team brought in $405 million in advertising and sponsorship revenue, more than any other soccer team.

They're also easily the most profitable, bringing in $288 million (US), more than Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham combined.

Here's the full list (in US dollars) if you want to do the numbers.

1) Manchester United - $3.69 billion

2) Barcelona - $3.64 billion

3) Real Madrid - $3.58 billion

4) Bayern Munich - $2.71 billion

5) Manchester City - $2.08 billion
