Melbourne Victory became the most successful side in the A-League last night, pulling off a remarkable heist in the Hunter valley with a 1-0 win over Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Victory scored the goal in the 9th minute, with a Leroy George free kick finding its way to James Donachie at the back post to knock down for Kosta Barbarouses to finish.

Later replays showed that Donachie was offside in the lead up, with the goal somehow not being overruled by the A-League’s Video Assistant Referee technology.

Football Federation Australia today released a statement saying that the VAR technology had stopped working during the play, leaving the reviewing official unable to view all the camera angles in order to overrule the call:

The Victory ended up withstanding some heavy attacking from newcastle, with goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas awarded the Joe Marston medal for his work keeping the Jets at bay.

Melbourne Victory became the first team to win the A-League from outside the top two after finishing fourth in the regular season, and having to beat premiers Sydney FC and second placed Newcastle away on their way to the win.
