The Socceroos have been on the hunt for a new manager since Ange Postecoglou quit shortly after world cup qualification was confirmed.

Van Marwijk takes over after having most recently been in charge at Saudi Arabia.

He has had a long management career, including two stints at Dutch giants Feyenoord and two seasons at German club Borussia Dortmund.

He also coached the Netherlands to the 2010 World Cup where they finished runners up to Spain, and resigned after a disastrous performance at the 2012 Euros.

Van Marwijk's most recent job at Saudi Arabia ended shortly after he helped them qualify directly to this year’s world cup in Russia ahead of Australia.

Postecoglou leaves the Socceroos after taking over ahead of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil where the Aussies left pointless, before winning the Asian Cup in Sydney in 2015.
