The Matildas are through to the 2019 World Cup in France after a 1-1 draw against Japan in the Asian Cup in Jordan overnight.

The Matildas have qualified after making it through to the semi-finals of the Asian Cup, which acts as a qualifying campaign for the World Cup.

The Matildas only needed a draw to qualify, and it was in the balance when Mizuho Sakaguchi scored to put the Japanese 1-0 up in the 63rd minute after the Aussies wasted a series of chances.

But Sam Kerr was the hero as she pulled off an 86th minute rescue act, nipping in front of the Japanese keeper to stab the ball home.

The 1-1 draw suited both sides, putting them both in the two qualification spots, so the Japanese centre backs were happy to pass amongst themselves until the end.

The Aussies finished as the top qualifiers in their group, with Japan second.
