Former Socceroos star Tony Vidmar has explained why he took a penalty with his wrong foot in the 2005 shootout against Uruguay that got Australia into our first World Cup in 32 years.

Vidmar stepped up when Mark Bresciano and Brett Emerton couldn’t take penalties, despite having only taken two penalties ever — one in a pre-season friendly and one in training.

What’s more, he elected to take the spot kick on his left foot — despite being right footed.

Vidmar explained his decision on Dead Set Legends

LISTEN HERE:

“Bresh was off and I think also Brett Emerton was off, so there was a couple of vacancies came up,” Vidmar said.

“Graham Arnold came up to me and said ‘would you take one?’ and stupid of me I said yes without even thinking… I hadn’t taken a penalty in a competition forever and also a lot of people have commented to me ‘why have you taken it with your left foot when you’re naturally right footed?’”

Vidmar scored in one of the ballsiest moves of all time — what a legend!

It’s worth treating yourself to whole penalty shootout again because let’s face it — it’s one of the all time great moments!

Vidmar also discussed the Socceroos’ World Cup form, Tim Cahill and Daniel Arzani.
