Were The USA Knocked Out Of The World Cup By A Phantom Goal?

The USA managed to choke away what looked like certain world cup qualification this morning, losing 2-1 to a Trinidad and Tobago team that had only taken three points from the first nine matches of the campaign.

Honduras and Panama winning their games meant the Americans fell from a direct qualification spot — third — down to fifth, and missing out entirely on next year’s tournament in Russia.

But one of the goals that confirmed their exit is, well, slightly dodgy.

Gabriel Torres’s equaliser for Panama against Costa Rica hits the post and rebounds, ricocheting off the striker’s shoulder into the post — but without appearing to ever cross the line.

Watch it for yourself:

Panama went on to win their game 2-1, with an 88th minute Roman Torres goal sending them directly to Russia.

Meanwhile, The USA’s choke against Trinidad and Tobago opened the door for Honduras, who snuck through to fourth in the group and to a date with the Socceroos over two legs for qualification for Russia.
