Western Sydney Wanderers this morning announced that coach Josep Gombau has been sacked, effective immediately.

A short statement posted to the club's website said that a review of the season had prompted the decision to appoint a new head coach for the 2018/ 19 season and beyond.

Gombau took over from Tony Popovic, the founding manager, in 2017 having previously coached Adelaide United.

While the Wanderers thanked Gombau for his time as coach, speculation that the Spaniard's days were numbered ramped up when Brendon Santalab slammed the team's "inconsistency" after failing to make the A-League finals.

"There's disappointment all round because when you have a squad like that and you don't make the finals, something's not right," the striker said on Monday.

"What a team that is, just the names. In pre-season you'd have put us up there as title contenders. There's no excuses this year - with all the changes and everything, we still had an incredible group of players, great footballers and we should be doing more.

"The team sheet is one of the best in the league but something's not clicking and we need to change something."

Santalab continued: "Ever since Popa left it's been an unsettled ship, anyone can see that with the inconsistency all season. We never got a rhythm and something has to change.

"Whatever that is, it's out of my control."
