... And It's A V6!

Here's your first look at the future of Supercars in Australia.

And you might not like it.

That's if you're a V8 purist, because the 2018 "next generation" Commodore is powered by a twin-turbocharged V6.

We've been given our first glimpse of what it'll look like when it rolls onto the grid at selected events next year as a wildcard entry.

But the V8 engine hasn't been parked just yet.

Officials have delivered a stay of execution to keep using the current engine before it's ditched for good in 2019.

Part of the reason why six pots are the future of Holden's Supercar programme is the fact there'll be no V8 version of the 2018 Commodore.

It's a sign of the times, as buyers flock to cheaper, more fuel efficient and environmentally friendly transport.

Supercars boss James Warburton hopes it'll entice more manufacturers to the sport.

"It's a win for all the current teams in terms of the simplicity and market relevance for an easy transition to the new Commodore in 2018.

This phased introduction sets a clear path forward for not only Holden but existing and new manufacturers in the sport."

The new V6 race engine is being built at GM's Performance Centre in the United States.

Triple Eight Racing is spearheading development for Holden, but don't expect Jamie Whincup, Shane van Gisbergen and Craig Lowndes to pilot a V6 next year.

A non-full time driver's likely to get the drive.
