The season-opening Clipsal 500 on the streets of Adelaide is almost here.

And in what promises to be a mouth-watering spectacle, Dunlop is predicting track records will be broken.

It's spent the off-season developing a new tyre that's 15mm wider and heavier than its predecessor.

The flatter tread surface from sidewall to sidewall promises more rubber on the road and extra grip.

Drivers say that'll mean quicker times on the track - something witnessed only last week when Nissan's Rick Kelly topped the times in testing in Sydney.

The qualifying record in Adelaide currently belongs to Jamie Whincup who put together a lap time of 1:20.03 in 2015.

While the Red Bull star also holds the race lap record with a 1:21.05 in a Commodore five years ago.

This year's race will see the format return to the classic 2 x 250km race format.

There'll also be a top 10 shootout on Saturday and Sunday to determine grid for both races.

With tight corners, concrete walls and top speeds of more than 250km/h, the ex-Formula 1 track rarely fails to deliver the thrills.

Throw in some scorching on track temperatures and it's poised to be a weekend no motorsport fan - diehard or casual - will want to miss.

Support categories dominate the schedule on Thursday before the Supercar big boys hit the track for the first time for practice on Friday morning at 9.40am (local).

A FEW STATS...

- The man with the most Clipsal 500 wins is Jamie Whincup who's won 4 of them.

- Adelaide is a Holden town with the General winning 12 times compared to 6 wins for Ford.

- 16 year old Alex Russo will become the youngest driver to race in the Championship.

- Simona De Silvestro is the first woman to compete in the Supercars full-time.

- At least at quarter of a million people are expected to flood Adelaide's east parklands over the 4 days.
