Ford fans are holding their breath.

While the Team DJR Penske Falcons are looking handy this season, there's still no word on what Ford we'll see on the grid next year.

Team Penske President Tim Cindric says time is running out for a decision on the fabled Mustang.

The final call rests with Ford Australia - despite pulling its official factory support back in 2015.

Since then Penske's Shell V-Power Racing and fellow team Prodrive have worked together on studies into a draft Mustang programme.

But Cindric concedes the Falcons may well go round for another year.

“I wouldn’t say it’s 100 percent over but at this point in time it’ll probably be the same as what we’re running now (FG X Falcons)," he told Supercars.com.

“I think the window is closing very quickly for Mustang. Anything beyond May I think becomes unrealistic to do a good job.”

New Supercar rules will make it easier to run two doors and turbos next season.

But Ford Oz has the final say on what happens because of an intellectual property deal on the use of the Falcon body and the Blue Oval logos.

Regardless of the decision from head office - Penske remains open to all options.

“We run Chevrolet in the IndyCar program which is obviously Holden, but there’s quite a few other manufacturers that we’ve raced with over the years."

“Ford is our first choice for sure, but we’re all ears for what the best step forward is.”
