Nissan Mulls Its Plans Post 2018

The Supercar rules are set for a major shake-up next year.

New Gen2 rules means teams will no longer be forced to run a V8 engine.

Two-door models will also get the green-light providing they meet the various homologation requirements for racing.

With that in mind, the chief minds at Nissan are tossing up whether to roll out a new racing package down the track.

“I think by mid-year we’d like to have a direction of where we’re going for both 2018 and 2019,” Nissan CEO Phil Emery told Supercars.com.

The manufacturer signed a new 2 year deal to continue its involvement with Kelly Racing just last year.

While a switch out of the Altimas is unlikely for next year, Emery's hinting an eventual return of the GT-R isn't entirely out of the question.

“On face value it doesn’t fit, but that’d be the same with some other brands that might have some coupe-style vehicles,” he said.

“We haven’t forced the discussion about fitting it around the frame because we haven’t got near to a position where the GT-R is an option."

But should it become an option, the car dubbed 'Godzilla' would send shockwaves up and down the Supercar grid.

It'd also revive memories of the early '90s when the Gibson Motorsport Skyline GT-R's dominated.

Whatever happens, Nissan isn't going anywhere with plans for an all-new racing package locked in for 2019.
