One of Supercar's most loved drivers is hanging up the helmet.

Craig Lowndes has confirmed he'll give up full time driving at the end of the current Virgin Australia Supercars Championship.

The 44 year old admits it's been one of the toughest decisions he's had to make and he does so with a heavy heart.

"I've always said that Bathurst 2006 was the most emotional and toughest race I've ever done in my career but I say with a heavy heart that has been the hardest decision."

That was the year he won the first Peter Brock Trophy, named in honour of his mentor who died in a rally crash only a month earlier.

Lowndes also used his retirement announcement to pay tribute to supporters.

"Thank you to all that have stood behind me in my career and professionally."

"I've always aid that fans are the backbone of our sport and the reason why I've always put a helmet on every race weekend so to them - thank you very much.

After 652 race starts, 106 wins, three Championships, five Barry Sheene medals and six Bathurst 1000 crowns (three shy of his mentor and idol, the great Peter Brock), Lowndesy's calling it a day.

Ironically Brock was Lowndes' (lovingly nick-named "The Kid" back then) first teammate when he debuted for the then Holden Racing Team in 1996.

Lowndesy's announcement was made in Townsville ahead of this weekend's Watpac Townsville 400 where he sits 4th in the Championship.

His next move will be a switch to the commentary box but he'll continue to race on as a co-driver at events like Sandown and Bathurst.
