Darwin Builds A Wall

Wait, what?

They're calling it the Great Wall Of Darwin.

OK, so that's a stretch.

But the safety upgrades aren't at Hidden Valley for this weekend's Supercar action.

A wall of 2,500 tyres has been built at the concrete fence at Turn 1 where Lee Holdsworth crashed last year.

The side-on, 56G impact with the wall left the Lee with pelvis, knee and rib fractures, forcing him out of the next three events.

After last year's horror, the powers that be are leaving nothing to chance this time round, ensuring the upgrade meets the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport's track safety regulations.

The wall runs 115 metres along the front of the concrete and measures 1200mm high.

Supercars COO Shane Howard has praised the Hidden Valley team on their efforts.

"Track safety is an ever-evolving process and the NT Government has always been proactive in this area as well as responding quickly when required," he said.

This year will be the 20th time the Supercars have raced in Darwin, and the event's become a staple on the calendar.

Practice for the Crownbet Darwin Triple Crown starts at 12.10 (local time) on Friday.

Triple M's coverage of Supercars is presented with Mobil 1. Purchase any Mobil 1TM SuperTM product for the chance to win a share of three HSV vehicles and $15000 worth of VISA gift cards. Visit askformobil.com.au
