After 7 hours and 11 minutes, relentless rain, crashes, safety cars and even a kangaroo, David Reynolds can finally call himself King of the Mountain.

Holden fans had been bracing for a Ford onslaught.

But they needn't have worried.

Mother Nature and the unpredictable nature of racing at Mount Panorama combined to deliver yet another thrilling Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

There's a reason they call it the "Great Race" and this one proved to be another nail-biter, right until the end.

Sure, it helped that Reynolds and his co-driver Luke Youlden started on the front row, but there were portions of the race when victory looked out of reach for the #9 Penrite Erebus Commodore.

But luck works in strange ways at Bathurst as rivals slowly dropped out.

Race favourite and pole-sitter Scott McLaughlin's car broke down.

Chaz Mostert went off the track.

James Courtney kissed a wall.

Shane Van Gisbergen found the sand.

While Rick Kelly beached it, bro.

No, seriously.

That's not all, James Moffat whacked the wall - not once, but twice for good measure.

We're not done.

Garth Tander smacked a barrier, Simona De Silvestro crunched it and called a towie, while Mark Winterbottom had a date with the concrete.

Through it all, Reynolds kept his nose clean and was in the right place when the last of the safety cars returned to the pits.

“I am absolutely spent,” said Reynolds.

“This bloke (Youlden) drove unbelievably all day, my crew was faultless.

“It was just a perfect day, it was so good.”

After last year's second place, Reynolds and Youlden went one better this year, outgunning Mobil 1 HSV Racing's Scott Pye and Warren Luff to the flag.

Shell V-Power Racing's Fabian Coulthard and Tony D'Alberto dragged Ford onto the podium in 3rd.

But the Peter Brock trophy belongs to David Reynolds and Luke Youlden who secured a thrilling victory that Holden fans have the next 12 months to soak up and enjoy.
