Ford is about to park the Falcon for good.

Tomorrow's when we expect confirmation DJR Team Penske and Tickford Racing have been given the green light to race Mustangs in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship from 2019.

It's been talked about ever since the company stopped producing Falcons in Australia back in 2016.

This won't be a fully-backed factory effort though, with the global Ford Performance division to play a key role.

But there's a twist.

No V8.

The new Mustang racer is likely to be powered by a twin-turbocharged V6.

The announcement will come just days after Holden suspended its own plans to develop a V6.

New 'Gen2' rules open the door for Mustangs and other 2-door coupes to be raced in Supercars as the sport moves on from being exclusive to 4-door sedans like the Commodore, Falcon and (discontinued) Nissan Altima.

It's been a long wait for Ford fans.

It's been 33 years since the last Mustang raced in the Australian Touring Car Championship (Supercars predecessor) when Dick Johnson drove one in 1985/6.
