Holden fans might have been left gasping when General Motors announced it was selling the European unit charged with designing and manufacturing the next Commodore.

In a $3 billion dollar deal announced earlier this week, Opel and Vauxhall will be taken over by Peugeot and Citroen parent company PSA.

GM's already reassured buyers Holden's product line will be unaffected for the next 5 years, and that includes the next Commodore which will be made in an Opel factory in Europe.

The good news extends to the company's racing program.

Triple Eight engineering is already hard at work on the aerodynamics of the new model which will be based on the Opel Insignia Sport unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show overnight (pictured above).

The switch to foreign-made product will also mean the end of the fabled V8.

Work on a new twin turbocharged V6 continues at GM's operations in Michigan.
