It's been a long time coming, but victory still tasted as sweet as ever for Craig Lowndes.

The Virgin Australia Supercars Championship veteran finally broke through to win his first race since July 2016 in Sunday's second leg of the Tyrepower Tasmania SuperSprint.

It ends a long and challenging period which saw Lowndes record just two podiums since.

Lowndesy gives plenty of credit to race engineer John 'Irish' McGregor, who's in his second full season working with the #888 Commodore.

“There’s still a lot to come, no doubt that there’s a bit of a pressure relief for us as a team and Irish has been copping a bit of criticism in the social world.

“I think hopefully we proved that we can achieve what we need to do.”

Brake gear changes have also helped Lowndes' form and he's also a massive fan of the new ZB Commodore package, which has been fun to tune up.

“I just think that we rolled the car out of the transporter about 80, 90 percent right,” he said.

“We’ve just been tweaking the car and making small adjustments."

“The car looked after its tyres and that’s what we aim to do this year.”

Shell V-Power Racing's Scott McLaughlin finished second with Jamie Whincup completing the podium to take an 11 point lead over McLaughlin in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship after his win on Saturday.

The series rolls on to Phillip Island for the WD-40 500 from April 20-22.
