If the prospect of 68 cars across 3 different Supercar categories wasn't enough to whet the appetites of fans this weekend, there's also this...

A brand new format.

Unlike last year's Supersprint, this year's Phillip Island round will see the grid contest two 250 kilometre races.

It'll mean an extra 130 kilometres will be covered on Saturday, and a further 50 on the Sunday.

But the extra mileage brings a greater test for the 2017-spec control tyres.

No one's really sure just how well the Dunlops will hold up around a circuit packed with long, fast corners.

Prodrive's Jason Bright says it could be fascinating weekend for the Championship.

“I think tyre life is going to be key. It's going to be interesting to see how it pans out," he said.

“It's not like the normal places that we have 250km races which are all street circuits so I think it will be good race strategy wise because you will see some guys coming home pretty strong."

A Ford hasn't won at the Island since 2013.

But that could change if the DJR Team Penske Falcons are back at the front.

It's also a track 2015 champ Mark Winterbottom enjoys.

“If we can get our setup right I think we can be pretty quick but it will be really important for us to get on top of that early,” Frosty told Supercars.com.

Opening practice for the WD-40 Phillip Island 500 begins at 12.30 tomorrow (AEST).
