Reynolds Blames Lack Of Self-Belief After 'Bridesmaid' Finish In Adelaide

... As SVG Goes Back To Back

It feels like we've been here before.

The Adelaide 500 had a touch of deja vu about it as Shane Van Gisbergen repeated last year's double victory to again take out both 250 kilometre races on Saturday and Sunday.

While the Kiwi again heads home a happy camper, the bloke who finished second is cursing himself for a missed opportunity.

David Reynolds emerged from the second and final pitstops on Sunday in the lead of the race and reckons he could've stayed there with a little more "ticker."

“I'm bitterly disappointed," said the Erebus Holden driver.

“My problem is I never believe in myself at this track. I never go well here and to pop out in the lead with 30 laps to go... I never thought it was possible."

“That's the god honest truth. I never believed in myself."

Last year's Bathurst winner even rammed the point home by putting this up on Twitter after the race.

“I've never gone good at this track, so I had a negative mindset heading into it. I was thinking 'oh, I'll probably end up eighth and 10th if I do alright'.

“I've never felt comfortable here. But that's the best car I've ever had here in my life, by a country mile.

Reynolds thinks he could've given SVG a harder time.

“So to finish fourth and second, I should be stoked – but I'm so disappointed. I let the lead of the race go.”

No such disappointment for Van Gisbergen, who sits right where he was this time last year, at the top of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship.

Misfortune for chief rivals Jamie Whincup and Scott McLaughlin did the #97 driver no harm at all.

Whincup suffered a transmission failure and didn't finish while McLaughlin recovered from a puncture to finish 10th.

“I love Adelaide, that was just awesome,” van Gisbergen said.

“It’s such a shame for Jamie, he had the dominant car. We went the wrong way with our set-up and had to battle it out there."

Incredibly, the 250-kilometre race went from lights to flag without a single safety car, allowing the race to wrap up in just an hour and 48 minutes.

“Davey was really quick and I expected him to battle me back."

“I can’t thank the team enough, it’s an awesome debut for the new Commodore.”

Garth Tander completed the podium collecting third for Garry Rogers Motorsport.

It's a dream debut too for Holden with its new ZB Commodore finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

The Adelaide crowd also lapping it up with the "sold out" signs going up at the box offices around the track on Sunday.

The Virgin Australia Supercars Championship heads for Melbourne next for the Coates Hire 400 at the Australian Grand Prix from March 22-25.

We'll leave you with a snippet of the wild and chaotic finish to the always crowd-pleasing Stadium Supertrucks support race which left at least one driver needing a change of underwear.
