DJR Team Penske driver Scott McLaughlin is in the box seat to win his first Supercars championship after winning the first race on the streets of Newcastle today.

McLaughlin — who finished ahead of Penske teammate Fabian Coulthard — went into the final round trailing Red Bull driver Jamie Whincup by 30 points.

But Whincup was involved in an incident with Michael Caruso after just three turns that left him needing repairs for 13 laps, costing him his lead.

McLaughlin will now take a 78 point lead into tomorrow’s last race of the season.

Even if Whincup wins, McLaughlin can win the championship by finishing 11th or higher.

If McLaughlin fails to finish Whincup can take the title by finishing ninth or higher.

McLaughlin’s win today confirmed the Teams’ Championship for DJR Team Penske.
