Scott McLaughlin isn't messing around.

The championship leader has shown off his pure speed around Mount Panorama on the Friday before the Bathurst 1000, displaying exactly why he's been hard to catch in 2017.

The Shell V-Power Racing star smashed the lap record 0.8 seconds in the final practice session of the day.

Yes, practice.

The Kiwi didn't slow down for qualifying either, setting the fastest time of the session with a 2:04.2254 - just shy of the 2:04.1470 that shredded the record book.

The man who used to own that record, Jamie Whincup, couldn't find the sort of pace that was needed to make tomorrow's all important Top 10 Shootout.

In fact he and fellow Triple Eight driver both ran off at the Chase as they pushed the limits.

Whincup will start 11th after James Moffat became the latest driver to kiss the wall at the entry to The Dipper, bringing the session to a premature end.

It's a huge blow for the Red Bull Holden Racing Team ace who is sitting second in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship.

It was a shocker too for the Nissan garage with none of their blokes (and lady) making the shootout.

Saturday will see a final practice session open to all drivers from 10:10 (AEDST) before the ten fastest drivers from Friday take part in the ARMOR ALL Top 10 Shootout at 17:10 (AEDST).

Triple M Rocks Bathurst thanks to Rheem - Australia's favourite in hot water.
