Supercar Break Could Shake Up The Pecking Order

Tests To Play Crucial Role...

If you didn't realise, the Supercars are on a mid-season break of sorts.

With four weeks between the last round at Winton and the next one at Hidden Valley, most of the teams are taking the opportunity to catch up on development work.

Right now there's little separating the Shell V-Power and Red Bull teams at the front with Prodrive a clear third.

That leaves the likes of Erebus, Garry Rogers Motorsport, Brad Jones Racing and Nissan to fight it out in the midfield.

With the top two teams looking unbeatable at this point, there are plenty of teams hoping to reclaim some speed in testing.

Prodrive boss Tim Edwards told Supercars.com there's a lot of excitement.

“We get allocated three each year, but one gets used before the season starts and the other is an enduro test before Sandown, so really you only get one proper test to play with."

“We’ve built up a test list of parts and ideas to go through and are relishing the opportunity to get on track and try some of those things, as I’m sure everyone else is as well."

But could the pecking order be in for a shake-up when the grid lines up in the Territory?

Edwards thinks so.

"It wouldn’t at all surprise me if it all clicks for someone and the order gets mixed up."

“At this time in 2015 everyone was saying we were going to walk in the rest of the year.

“There were complaints about our aero, dampers, everything, but in the back end of the year we were well and truly run down with those exact cars.”

The Red Bull team are also hard at work on the 2018 Commodore but are far from done extracting more speed from their current package.

Former Mobil 1 HSV Racing boss Adrian Burgess doesn't see anyone disrupting the Triple Eight-Team Penske fight at the front of the field.

“Unfortunately at the moment I don’t think anyone else is really operating at that level, but to be fair they probably haven’t got the budgets that the front guys do either," he told a New Zealand radio station.

“There’s no substitute for having a good healthy budget and those two teams at the top there have certainly got that.”

“The Red Bull guys probably sneak it for me a little bit, only really because they’ve both been there before."

If there's another championship challenger waiting to be found, then Hidden Valley is the place to do it.

The Supercars tackle the popular Territory track from June 16-18.
