The Stakes Are Raised

Hard to believe but up until now the Supercars have been racing at the Australian Grand Prix for kicks (and bragging rights).

That all changes next year.

They'll now be an official - yes points-paying - round of the Championship starting in 2018.

To sweeten the deal, the deal to race at Albert Park's been extended for a further six years until 2023.

Grand Prix boss Andrew Westacott says it's a win-win.

"We continually listen to our fans and there has been a strong appetite for Supercars Championship round, so we see the partnership as a highly beneficial one and we are excited to bring this opportunity to fruition," he said.

"It has also been great to have the support of Formula 1 and the can-do attitude of Supercars to help bring it all together and work towards creating an even better event for 2018 and beyond."

It's been a long time coming but defending champion Shane can Gisbergen says it'll make the Albert Park race even more important.

"We've had some success at Albert Park over the years but victory will be even sweeter with Championship points on the line."

Series leader Fabian Coulthard agrees.

"The Grand Prix has always been a terrific event to race at and now has gotten even better."

Full dates and race schedules will be released in the coming months.
