Racing Comes First

They're the hottest team on the Supercar grid right now.

So it's not surprising there's an "i'll have what they're having" feeling amongst some of the other drivers and teams.

The question is, do DJR Team Penske have plans to expand?

The short answer?

No.

Rivals Triple Eight and Prodrive run three and four cars each and supply a number of customers with cars and equipment.

But Shell V Power Racing won't be following the same road.

“Two cars is where we’ll stay. I don’t see that changing for us,” said Team Penske boss Tim Cindric to Supercars.com.

But could it happen in the future?

“In this category, in my mind it’s either two or four because you get into sharing booms and garages and partnerships."

“You never say never, but we experienced it as a one-car team, being an odd-man out (sharing with Tekno in 2015)."

“I think with having a race team half a world away, going beyond two cars wouldn’t be our best move.”

Penske themselves were Prodrive customers when they entered the sport with DJR.

But that arrangement ended last year.

This year, they're doing things differently - and it's working.

Scott McLaughlin swept the weekend racing at Barbagallo in Western Australia.

His fellow Kiwi team-mate Fabian Coulthard tops the Championship, with McLaughlin only 31 points behind in 5th.

Team DJR Penske are clearly focused on the race for the title with no immediate plans to begin supply cars for customers.

“In racing, any minute you take your eye away to service or produce things (for customers) your priority isn’t 100 percent focussed on making your team better," said Cindric.

“If we had customers, we’d look at that as a responsibility where customers have to come first. That’s how we operate in business. In racing that’s very hard to do.

One area where the team is willing to share is safety equipment.

They've already shared their leg protection tray to rivals through manufacturer LSM with new rules mandating increased safety from the Sandown 500 in September.

Look for the Shell V-Power Fords to again set the pace on around Winton Raceway next weekend (May 19-21).
