The Supercar Tyre Wars

Will Bathurst Be A Blowout?

The Supercar tyre saga threatens is threatening to blow up the biggest race on the calendar, the Bathurst 1000.

As drivers head for Barbagallo for this weekend's Perth Supersprint, moves are being made behind the scenes for a pre-Bathurst test.

It follows another weekend of tyre failures at the Phillip Island event.

A gobsmacking 20 separate tyre blowouts ruined the races of several big names.

The rubber row prompted Dunlop to launch an investigation into the cause of the failures.

Nine race tyres were sent to its headquarters in Japan for closer examination.

But the sport's divided as to whether it's Dunlop's fault - or the teams for pushing too hard.

Supercars boss James Warburton says every thing will be done to ensure the sport's flagship race at Mount Panorama doesn't descend into a farce.

“If we are not 100 per cent satisfied that we have an adequate resolution and testing program, we have the option of returning to the 2016 Dunlop tyre specification as a fail-safe option for Bathurst and Pukekohe," he told Fox Sports.

“We have great partners in Dunlop and we are working around the clock to ensure a solution.”

That'll almost certainly mean a test ahead of the Bathurst 1000, where conditions will mimic the wear and tear that led to mass failures around Phillip Island.

But not everyone's angry about the tyre dramas.

Jamie Whincup says it's spiced things up.

“I am sure there is a lot going on behind the scenes to make the tyre a bit more durable but to be honest I don’t mind it,’’ Whincup said.

Whether the 2017 tyre bites the dust remains to be seen, with the resurrection of the 2016 model still an option if Dunlop (and Supercars officials) can't get this worked out.

The Perth Supersprint kicks off from Barbagallo on Friday (live on Fox Sports).
