Townsville 400 Track Pointers

What To Know

You could say the Townsville Reid Park circuit is really two tracks rather than one.

There's the street circuit feel that you get with bumps, kerbs and heavy braking zones.

Then there are the fast flowing turns and long loaded corners.

Getting car set up to conquer this sort of situation is tricky to say the least.

So where do we start?

TYRES

An extra FOUR Dunlop Super Softs will be delivered to each team garage, with four to be returned after Friday practice (as is the norm).

The twin 200-kilometre races will mean teams have to think very carefully about what tyres they'll run with and when.

Townsville is a track that demands more from the rubber with the left rears set for an almighty punishing.

Temperatures will be key as always, particularly in the two 20 minute qualifiers and the Top 10 shootout on Sunday.

FUEL

A 120 litre fuel drop is on the cards for both of the weekend's races with most cars expected to duck into the twice.

Throw in a safety car and strategy could be out the window.

POWER

260 km/h is where the Supercars will top out and while that's quick, it's not blindingly fast like some of the other tracks on the calendar.

Traction through the windy portions of the track will get some extra attention to improve power delivery - and vice versa.

BRAKES

With tyres copping a pounding in the climes of North Queensland, it's on the brakes to perform.

Lockups should be common as the cars whack the kerbs around the circuit.

SETUPS

Good brakes and solid traction will be near the top of the list for each of the teams as they tweak their setups for the weekend.

Suspension will get lots of wear over a lap with reliability essential.

Watpac Townsville 400 practice starts at 12.10 (EST) on Friday.
