How do you making a racing car go faster?

It sounds like an easy enough question to answer, but it's anything but if you're a Supercar team trying to eek out every last ounce of pace.

Testing in the Virgin Supercars Championship is strictly limited meaning track time outside of the regular rounds is pretty precious.

As roughly half the grid take to the track in Ipswich and Winton today, Supercars.com help us get to the bottom of what to know.

- Teams are allowed just 3 test days per years to use between January 16 and December 15.

- Track running is 9am to 5.30 pm.

- Each car gets 16 super soft and 16 soft tyres allocated for testing.

- Left over tyres from races are allowed.

- Corporate ride days, demonstrations and promotional drives don't count as an official test day.

- Teams can test new drivers with what's called an Evaluation day as long as they haven't competed in five or more main events the previous season.

- Three rookie days are allowed for new drivers in a debut season to allow them to get to grips with Supercar machinery.

- New car shakedowns can run no more than 60-kilometres of running to complete basic set ups and system checks.

- If a car blows up or testing is abandoned for whatever reason before 11am, the day will not count as a test day.
