The Pros of Celebrating Festivus

If you're a Seinfeld fan, chances are that you're familiar with Festivus: a secular holiday celebrated on 23 December.

Christmas is great and all but there's no harm in adding another day of celebration to the festive calendar.

Festivus has long been celebrated in real life – and with good reason. Here's a few pointers on why Festivus is proving popular amongst Seinfeld fans and the world at large.

1. Decorating is easy

The single decoration Festivus calls for is an aluminium pole. There's no fragile baubles, no hideous crafts lovingly glued together by well-meaning children, and no giant trees to lug in and out of the house.

2. You're required to whinge

Festivus wouldn't be complete without the Airing of Grievances. This requires detailing to family and friends how the world has disappointed you over the course of the year. You'll then detail how each of them has wronged you and express any general resentments you might harbour. It's incredibly cathartic, but it's also worth remembering that you'll be on the receiving end too.

3. You'll witness miracles... lots of miracles

Festivus miracles are just like regular miracles, except that they're not miraculous at all. Went to the shop to buy milk and came back with milk? It's a Festivus miracle! Dropped a fork without breaking it? You'd better believe that's a Festivus miracle.

4. There's wrestling

The Festivus finale is known as Feats of Strength. The head of the household has to be pinned in a wrestling match, at which point Festivus officially ends. The celebration continues until the pinning occurs.

5. It's super cheap

Except for a family meal and the initial cost of a metal pole, there's zero cost involved. No presents means no credit card debt.
