A Mackay man's Yeppoon snorkelling trip was ruined on Australia Day.

The 40 year old surfaced near the Observatory to find his boat missing. He swam to Middle Island where he spent Friday night.

The unmanned 6m yacht washed ashore on Farnborough Beach, triggering a Queensland Police Service's Maritime Search and Rescue effort. The RACQ Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service was also called in for the search.

Local fisherman spotted the man from their dinghy on Saturday morning. He was taken to Great Keppel Island where he was able to catch a ferry to Rosslyn Bay.

The man is in good health and is believed to have suffered only minor cuts and bruises. The yacht remains intact but is considered beyond repair.
