A Newton family is counting itself lucky and very grateful to their 3 year old after a weekend fire.

The Tasmania Fire Service was called to a house fire in Newtown Sunday morning and when fire units from Hobart and Glenorchy arrived the house full of thick black smoke.

Firefighters entered the house wearing breathing apparatus, quickly bringing the fire under control, containing it to the kitchen with approximately $20,000 damage.

A three year old boy alerted his father to the fire, allowing the family of four a very lucky escape from their burning home, without injury.

Investigation has shown the property did not contain any working smoke alarms and the cause of the fire was due to cooking being left unattended.

TFS says this is another case of house-holders not paying enough attention to fire safety in their homes and just a few simple actions can help keep the family safe from fire at home.

Tasmania Police and Tasnetworks were also in attendance at the blaze with TFS says could have been avoided by remembering to never leave cooking unattended and ensure it's turned off before you turn away. They have also said you must install a photoelectric smoke alarm in each sleeping area, hallway and living area to assist with home safety.
