On Tuesday a four year old girl fell into the water from a kayak her family had taken for a ride along the Karuah river near lemon tree passage.

Around 2:30pm on Tuesday, emergency services were called to Mallabula Point, Mallabula from reports that the young girl was unresponsive in the water. 

Four ambulance crews and a rescue helicopter fled to the scene with both paramedics and a critical care doctor. 

The young girl was pulled from the water and treated by bystanders and paramedics but could not be saved.

She was then taken to John Hunter Hospital where she died.

Ambulance Inspector Mark Gardiner said, “this was an incredibly distressing scene for bystanders, family members and first responders”.

A brief for the coroner is being prepared along with further investigations on the circumstances of the incident.
