In a sobering reminder of how tough it can be for people at this festive time of year, UnitingCare West have put out an urgent request to the people of Perth for public support, in the wake of a spike in demand for food hampers.

UCW CEO Amanda Hunt said demand for food by families and individuals doing it tough this festive season was unprecedented.

“We’re doing our best to prepare enough hampers to meet all the requests coming in from across Perth and the Peel region, but we’re in danger of falling short... We’re urging the Perth community to help us reach out to people experiencing hardship, to put food on tables, presents under trees and above all else, give people a sense of belonging, hope and purpose this Christmas.”

- UCW CEO Amanda Hunt

Ms Hunt went on to suggest that donations of pantry food and special Christmas items would be most welcomed, including: long-life milk and custard, tinned ham, Christmas puddings, fruit mince pies, biscuits (sweet and savoury), tuna, rice, pasta, tinned goods, pasta sauce, fruit juices, dried fruits and nuts, muesli bars and noodles.

Food donations can be made at one of UnitingCare West’s three Connection Hubs:

People can also play their part by visiting their nearest Target store and purchasing $2 gift tag ‘baubles’, or $3 gift boxes in the lead-up to Christmas. You can also leave an unwrapped gift under the Christmas tree in your Target store, which will be included in UnitingCare West’s gift hampers.

Finally, if you'd rather leave a financial donation, you can do so here.

We know the people of Perth will dig deep to help everyone enjoy a memorable Christmas.
