A man in his 70's from the Eastern suburbs of Sydney has died overnight from Covid-19.

The comes as NSW Covid numbers escalate to 89 new infections today, with 64 of those infected from south-western Sydney.

Today's death is the second recorded death linked to the current Delta outbreak following the death of a woman in her 90's only two days ago.

Three quarters of todays recorded cases are close contacts while 21 are believed to have been infectious while out in the community.

As numbers continue to rise, Premier Gladys Berejiklian is pleading with Sydney residents to stay home and avoid visiting other family members wherever possible.

Premier Berejiklian said the city will need to see the number of active cases drop dramatically before they think about easing restrictions.

"We will, as a government, take the health experts' advice on what we announce as the next stage of the lockdown beyond Friday," she said.

According to the NSW Premier, a majority of the active cases recorded were close family members of known positive cases.

The rise in numbers comes as health officials discuss the likelihood of the remote learning restrictions being extended past Friday.
