Adelaide’s new U City development is set to officially become the “greenest” building in South Australia, landing a six-star green rating.

Predicted to use 45 per cent less energy and 30 per cent less water than a comparable new building, the plans have been assessed by the Green Building Council of Australia using the Green Star rating system.

South Australia Minister for Sustainability, Environment and Conservation Ian Hunter said the rating, which was scored 84.9 points out of a possible 100, followed a “clever” design process which identified and sourced ethical and sustainable elements.

“Our overall goal is about working towards creating more sustainable buildings and communities across South Australia,” he said.

“We hope U City will now be a great example for others to follow.”

To be constructed in the CBD on the site of the former Maughan Church, the $100 million development will include an embedded electricity network, gas boosted solar hot water, double glazing, bicycle racks, a community bus and five electric car-charging stations.

The U City building will be open for business in 2019.
