The Australian Bureau of Statistics have released data showing that more than 30,000 adults in Greater Shepparton, and 30% of the region's youth aged 2 - 17, are overweight or obese.

Goulburn Valley Community Health dietitian Hannah Vass said the issue is complex, and not "just as easy as saying it's an individual choice", with a number of external variables that affect an individual's behaviour, including the prices of different types of food, and the availability and quality of sporting and exercise facilities.

This morning Seany spoke to health and fitness expert Sam Wood about the report, and how we, as a region, can improve moving forward.

"More needs to be done in schools, I don't understand why food education isn't as important as Maths and English... I don’t understand why Physical Education at School seems to be sliding down the hierarchy of curriculum”

- Sam Wood

Sam also believes part of the issue stems from food companies using deceptive labelling, stating, “It’s fascinating the tricks that food labels can play. It’s hard to understand.”
