Large hailstones, wild winds and heavy rain are forecast for parts of Melbourne as a cool change rolls over the city.

After four days of heat, the Bureau of Meteorology say a storm is likely to hit Melbourne this afternoon.

Thunderstorms are due to hit Melbourne between 4pm and 6pm on Tuesday, bringing damaging rain, hail and wind, as well as a welcome 10C drop in the temperature which earlier reached 36C.

"If these storms do develop there is the potential that they could become severe ... we might see damaging winds in excess of 90km/h, heavy rainfall that could lead to flooding and also large hailstones as big as two centimetres," Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Stephen King said this morning.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 3:40 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Rosebud and the area east of Ballarat.
