Robert Whittaker has defeated Yoel Romero by decision at UFC 213, becoming the first Aussie to hold a UFC title.

He won the interim middleweight title by unanimous decision in a five-round bout with Romero, despite an early leg injury.

He fought back to claim the final three rounds and grab the gold.

"(The injury) was pretty bad, but champions are made of this stuff," he said after the fight.

Romero was previously undefeated in the UFC, with eight straight wins since 2013.

But Whittaker was undefeated at middleweight, too, with six wins on the trot.

He will face Michael Bisping for the middleweight championship later this year.
