A bloke wanted by the police has entered into an extraordinarily entertaining comment war on the very Facebook post calling for him to turn himself in.

It all started when Richland WA Police Department uploaded a shot of 38-year-old Anthony Akers under the headline "Wanted Wednesday!" explaining that he was wanted for "failure to comply".

And while it may seem like a long-shot to some, it actually wasn't long before Akers himself saw the post - and responded with a pithy: " Calm down, I'm going to turn myself in."

The police responded almost immediately, but it wasn't until a few days later that things really took a turn for the rom-com-worthy.

"Thank you, tying up a couple loose ends since I will probably be in there a month," he replied. "Should be there in the next 48 hours."

By now, Akers and the Richland Police had hundreds of people following their story, all of whom were pretty keen to hear how it turned out.

And so, on Tuesday, the cops posted another gentle reminder to Akers that he was, you know, a wanted man and could he please do them a favour and drop by?

Luckily, Akers seems like the kind of guy who can take a good hard look at himself and knows when to say sorry.

"Dear RPD, it's not you, its me," he wrote. "I obviously have commitment issues. I apologise for standing you up, but let me make it up to you.

"I will be there no later than lunchtime tomorrow, I know you have no reason to believe me after what I did to you, but I promise that if I don't make it on my own by lunchtime tomorrow I will call for a ride to assist me with my commitment issues.

"Thank you in advance to your response if you are patiently giving me another chance with us, I know I don't deserve it.

"P.S. You're beautiful [sic]."

If you're waiting with bated breath for the conclusion of this epic game of cat and mouse you're not the only one; eventually, and in classic Akers style, the man wanted by police and beloved by social media users posted a photo of himself in the lobby of the cop shop with the caption: "Here for our date sweetheart".

And thus ends possibly the nicest police chase of all time.
