The first ever ‘alco-gate’ is set to be rolled out and trialled in Australia within months.
Boom gates fitted with breathalysers will first be trialled in Melbourne, according to a report in the Herald Sun.
However, the location of the first boom gate has not yet been revealed.
The roll-out in Victoria comes after the National Roads and Motorists' Association (NRMA), urged the NSW government to trial out this exact operation at car parks near high-risk drink-driving environments.
Although, Melbourne will be the first before a nation-wide roll out if the trial is successful in 2020.
A similar operation was recently tested in Sweden.
Motorists were required to blow into a breathalyser attached to a boom-gate in order to exit a ferry terminal.
Only motorists who were under the limit were allowed to exit.
