More than 200 James Cook University students have spent the night in emergency accommodation at Murray Stadium following a large fire that broke out in a residential building.

Emergency services were called to the campus on Angus Smith Drive just before 1am following reports of a blaze at one of the accommodation blocks.

Two residential buildings were evacuated and the fire was quickly extinguished.

No one was injured in the blaze which has caused moderate damage to the building.

Police are now working to establish an evacuation centre to house around 220 students who have been displaced as a result.

The cause of the blaze at this stage is unknown.
