A crime scene has been established after remains, believed to be human, were found in bushland north of Taree on Thursday morning.
A crew from the Rural Fire Service made the discovery at 6:10am on Yarratt Road.
The RFS had put out a small fire in the Yarratt State Forest when they made the discovery.
Officers from Manning-Great Lakes Police District are on the scene and have initiated an investigation.
The remains are believed to be those of an adult.
A post mortem examination will be conducted to confirm identity and cause of death.
