In breaking news, police are currently responding to an incident in Carlton.

Three men with a firearm were seen entering a building on Drummond Street at approximately 2.45pm./

According to Victoria Police, there are no reports of injuries or shots fired.

It is understood that a nearby school has been placed in lockdown as a precaution.

From the scene, 9 News' Sam Cucchiara told the Triple M Newsroom that the situation is still unfolding.

"We've seen dozens of heavily armed police swarm the area," he said.

"They have shut down the street and are telling residents that they're not allowed to go inside.

"It was around 2.45pm when three men armed with a gun were seen entering a housing commission complex in Carlton, and that's when the emergency situation began.

"A primary school and a childcare centre were put into lockdown this afternoon, with parents so far unable to pick up their kids."

UPDATE:

As of 5.30pm, police officers are understood to have been assisting children from the nearby schools leave the campus, with lockdown measures no longer in place.

Police remain at the scene.
