A teenage boy has drowned after getting into trouble while jumping off rocks at Bar Beach this afternoon.

The 16 year old was with a group of friends on the northern headland near Susan Gilmore Beach at around 3:30pm.

The boy didn't resurface following a jump.

A major emergency response was launched to find him, involving surf lifesavers, police, paramedics and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

He was taken to Cooks Hill SLSC but sadly he couldn't be revived.

“On behalf of the entire Surf Life Saving family I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the family and friends of this young man,” said Mr Pearce.
