Brisbane is bracing for a drenching, as ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie makes her way over the South East.

A severe weather warning has been issued, with the system is expected to continue moving southeastwards over the Central Highlands this morning, before tracking over southeast Queensland during the afternoon.

Julian De Morton from the weather bureau says we're in for some very heavy rainfall from as soon as late morning.

"We're expecting falls up to 200 mm for Brisbane and the Gold Coast but we could see local falls in excess of that, particularly in areas like the Gold Coast Hinterland"

De Morton says the winds will also pack a punch -

"We should see an increase in gales so we've got gale warnings out. There will also be the possibility of strong winds across higher ground and near the low centre as well"

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Superintendent Greg Tomlinson says now is the time to be preparing our properties.

"Look after any loose items you may have lying around the yard, make sure they're secure and put away and wherever possible just stay indoors, stay out of the weather, until the system passes over"
