A bus has exploded into flames on the edge of the Sydney CBD.

'Extreme smoke' and two-metre high flames were seen near the Flinders Street and South Darling Road intersection at approximately 7.30pm last night.

The 394 service from La Perouse to the city caught fire, according to a NSW Transport spokesperson.

It is understood that only the driver was on board, and there were no passengers according to the ABC.

An investigation, conducted by the Office of Transport and Safety Investigations, is underway today into the incident.
