A spike in out-of-control burn-offs across District 18 has seen local CFA crews call for extreme caution.

Volunteers have responded to a high volume of out-of-control private burn offs since the end of fire restrictions, the majority of the district's municipality.

District 18 covers a number of areas; including Birchip, Charlton, Mildura, Ouyen and Robinvale.

Officials are reminding property owners that having enough water on hand is essential, there isn't enough time to run back to the house if the fire gets out of control.

We're being reminded to notify neighbours at least 2 hours before starting a burn, check weather conditions, check fuel moisture conditions, and make sure there are enough people to monitor, contain and extinguish the burn safely.

Crews are putting out the call for locals to check Council by-laws, and register burn-offs to prevent volunteers being sent out when they may not be needed.

Property owners can register their burn offs by calling 1800 668 511.
